AMEN RA "Mass
III" 2LP
(Sound Devastation Records)
Decaying cathedrals. The march at twilight towards
a sure death. Infested soil. Millions of decrepit bones in an eternal
sleep. Surrounded by shrapnel, rusty bullets and locusts. Cries
still echo in the barren fields, remaining unheard by today's deaf
society. It's on this soil that the great war came to an end. It's
from this soil that a band arose that embraces this past, this pain,
this blasphemy. And so, 'Mass III' is born. Far outstripping the
Church of Ra's previous recorded attempts, the opus finally captured
their stunning live sound and caustic emotion, cementing Amenra
as one of the most important bands in the alternative heavy music
scene at the moment. 'Mass III' will infest your mind like a lingering
cancer, bound to spit out your soul like a shriveled, yellowed husk,
leaving you on a morphine drip in a side ward of the local psychiatric
hospital. And that's just the beginning. Double Heavyweight LP in
matte gatefold printed sleeve. Standard edition of 400 copies on
black vinyl.

BENEATH THE FROZEN SOIL / NEGATIVE REACTION Split
CD

This split presents a bitter and unforgiving
struggle between the raw blackened doom etal of Swedish doomsters
Beneath The Frozen Soil, and the well-known hateful sludge
of New York's gods, Negative Reaction. There are no winners
in this dirty battle, just fifty bleeding and harsh minutes straight
from the most unpleasant side of the genre
Expect for totally

BONGZILLA "Shake: The Singles" CD
(Barbarian Records)
"This full length CD collects all of
BONGZILLA's 7" splits and unreleased material. 12
tracks of primal, resin-coated sludgecore from the masters of
the genre! This is BONGZILLA before they grew into the
fuzz-sludge behemoth they are today. The music is a little more
simple here than, say, Gateway, but all of these tunes are fully
baked, bulldozing sludgecore at it's most crushing. Listen to
"Witch Weed" and you know Tony Iommi would only
be proud. Scratchy black metal style vocals, a whole different
bass tone than later records, melodic but crushing guitar work,
crashing drums, and a hidden track that sums up this band's aesthetic
perfectly. Put this in your CD player and watch the smoke rise.
A must have for stoner/sludgcore/ doom crust freaks." (Crucial
Blast)

BUZZOVEN "Sore"
CD
(Roadrunner Records)
Opening with the repeated audio sample "welcome
to violence" over a wash of rumbling white noise, occasional
bass notes, and gunshot snare hits, "Sore" captures
the mammoth drumming abilities of Ash Lee, Kirk's exceptionally
painful pick-slides down his Les Paul, and the punishing, hardcore
brutality of this band at their peak. Unfortunately, it was precisely
the elements the band sang about that took them down. Heroin and
years of physical abuse took their toll on the original incarnation
of Buzzoven, and Kirk was left holding
the bag - quite literally - as the band imploded. Over the next
few years, he would reassemble Buzzoven numerous
times with different lineups, some to great effect, some to quite
the opposite, however, none with the same kind of viciousness
as this one.

FALL OF EFRAFA
"Elil" 2LP
(Sound Devastation Records)
Fall of Efrafa
follow up their debut release 'Owsla' with the second part of the
trilogy known as 'The Warren of Snares'. Elil is an even deeper
insight into the concept of Watership Down and the relations to
human society, tackling mainly with religion and featuring two of
my personal favourite quotes from Richard Dawkins. Musically it
is a 3-track EPIC. Influences such as Mouth of The Architect,
Rosetta, Cult of Luna and Godspeed You! Black Emperor,
which were prehaps overlooked slightly during Owsla, can here shine
through alongside a strong d-beat/crust background, in what can
only be described as the most innovative, beautiful and thought-provoking
atmospheric-metal release in the past decade. 2xLP gatefold, 500
copies on black vinyl with etched D-side.

FLATLANDS "Vermuyden" MCD

Neurosis and Cult of Luna, but not following blindly

and so on in, around and about their local area this band bring
a new and intriguing take on heavy.

FLATLANDS / SUNSHINE REPUBLIC Split 12"
(SuperFi Records)
Flatlands
are seriously heavy in a stripped-down Isis style, which
monolithic, catchy riffs crashing into each other and plenty of
screaming. Two quite long songs from them. Sunshine Republic
are on a more experimental tip, reminding these ears of House
Of Low Culture, though there are elements of doom, post-rock
and noise in the mix too. They contribute one really long song.
Pressing: 330 grey 12"'s on heavyweight 180-gramme vinyl.

FLESHPRESS "Wörm Dirges" CD
(Kult of Nihilow)
Unlike Fleshpress' newer one, "III",
described as clean and spacious and open (not words you'd expect
to find in a review of a sludgy doom record) "Wörm Dirges"
is much less polished, much more primitive and primal, and not
nearly as slow, but still plenty sludgy and heavy. Plenty of Eyehategod-isms
for sure, but these two extended mostly instrumental jams don't
sound metal as much as they sound sort of krautrocky, or post
rocky or even post punky in a weird way. Very reminiscent of Dutch
hypno metallers Gore, a simple riff repeated over and over
and over and over. Completely and utterly hypnotic. Both tracks
devolve into dreamy drones here and there before lurching back
into sludge mode, but the interesting thing is that the main riffs
in each track (two tracks, two riffs!) don't sound metal so much
as they sort of sound like Black Flag. Seriously. Maybe
Black Flag at 16rpm. You can -almost- imagine them sped
up with Rollins ranting over the top. But c'mon, Black Flag
at 16rpm?!?! If that doesn't sound like the best fucking thing
ever to you, there's something seriously wrong. Obviously this
is essential for the drone doom dirge faithful, SUNNO))),
Earth, Boris, Corrupted, etc. as well as
fans of the new post rock/metal hybrids (Isis, Conifer,
Tides, Baroness, Buried At Sea, Pelican)
But other folks into stuff like Circle or Salvatore
or the more extreme end of the post rock spectrum might really
dig this too. Packaged in a cool tri-fold printed cardstock sleeve.

FLESHPRESS "III" CD
(Kult of Nihilow)
This is a good one. A really good one. This
is one of those records we've been waiting for, a band that takes
the sound of SUNN0))) and Earth, that soon to be
done to death slow motion guitar dirge doom, to a whole new level.
It's still heavy and glacial, dense and totally overwhelming,
but there's just something about it, that sounds, maybe clean,
spacious, open? The guitar tone and the composition and the recording
all mesh in some magical way to make the guitars float and drift.
"III" isn't sludgy in the way we think of sludge, it's
crystal clear, the guitars sharp and well defined, the riffs barbed
and glinting in the moonlight the vocals like thorns through soft
flesh. But it's all still so heavy. REALLY HEAVY. Maybe even moreso
for the perfect production and sonic spaciousness. It's almost
dreamy in a way, while somehow remaining dark and ominous and
massively brutal. It's hard to explain exactly how they did it,
or what -exactly- it is, but this record just really hit the spot
in a way few of the many doom-dirge-drone clones have managed
lately. Packaged in a gorgeous silkscreened duotone cd sleeve
with a tiny sealable flap! The image is a misty mysterious forest
with metallic print and a huge stone figure hunched over in the
woods. Appropriately haunting and creepy!

FROGSKIN / TAUNT
Split 7"
(Streaks Records)
This is a nasty, alcohol imbued and drug-abusing
cluster bomb! Each band one song. While both playing the same style
of dirty, grooving sludge, they still emphasize their own approach
and blend. Taunt with a monumental, 1 riff based but very
varied song that crumbles every piece of dope. Foaming with rage,
Frogskin on the other hand blow out a rumbling blast of a
song, spitting acid in nearly 8 minutes. While Taunt are
self-destructive and desperate, Frogskin concentrate on suffering,
pain and anger. Both smashing in the mud as hell, so fasten your
seatbelts! This is a pressing of 525.

MARY BELL "s/t"
CD
(Trabuc Records)
Behind the assuming monicker, actually that
of an infamous child murderess, lurks an outfit possessed of a formidable
fury and truly heinous heaviosity. This Dutch foursome are purveyors
of a weapons-grade sludgeattack that steers admirably clear of Vinum
Sabbathi stoner/doom cliche, indeed one that has the decency
to sound instead like a genuine wander into the eldritch realms
of cosmic horror and mental illness. Less playful than Iron Monkey
yet less abstract than Khanate, and with a truly unnerving
vocal attack not altogether unlike the product of some tasty Moss/Buzzov*en
hybrid, this five-track flagellation-fest deftly spices up it's
snail's pace dirges with a palpable violence of delivery. A nicely
nihilistic dredge through untold sewers of human wreckage, with
a fierce force of intent thankfully far removed from the slightly
dilettante-ish, clod-hopping attempts at sludge/doom fast cluttering
up it's scene. Yet more proof positive that, though there's little
here you won't have heard before, now and again a good crawl across
broken glass can be just the tortuous and terrifying ticket.

MARZURAAN "Solid Wood" LP
(Kult of Nihilow)
"After the rugged feedback fest of "Solid
State", the Gateshead/Newcastle Upon Tyne based four-piece
Marzuraan return with "Solid Wood" to solidify
their position as the underdog of the post-drone/noise rock/crawl
core scene. "Solid Wood" reveals yet another perspective
to Marzuraan's unique sound with the emphasis switched
from mind-piercing feedback and monolithic repetition of riffs
to a more harmonic and brooding approach. The warmer yet undoubtedly
equally heavy sound can be experienced throughout the first two
tracks "Punch the Goat" and "Beating Them Off with
a Stick" where the sluggish rhythm, softly overdriven guitar
and pulsating bass create a hypnotic texture, contrasted by the
tortured and necroid vocals, sounding like the inferno of passed
away black metal vocalists in one man. "Bad Flange"
makes a brief return to the feedback driven punishment of earlier
Marzuraan recordings and definitely represents the most
ominous and tormenting moments on this album. "Nice Wang"
completes the final minutes of "Solid Wood" with a seemingly
soothing atmosphere of melodic guitars yet eventually the intensity
grows and reaches its climax with just the final gasps of the
delirious vocals remaining. Kult of Nihilow presents the
album on black vinyl, limited to 515 copies and packaged in a
lavish full colour sleeve with silver/gold/black insert."

MARZURAAN "Five Years Worth of Fuck All" CD
(At War with False Noise)
This collection comprises of demos, live stuff,
rarities and rehersals from the UK's most consistantly interesting,
forward-thinking, and just plain fucking great band of the last
decade. Starting off from now and moving backwards through time
to the early bedroom demo days, this CD shows Marzuraan's
evolution from simplistic droning minimalism of the two bass lineup
to the full-on rock beast of today. The album kicks off with a
cover of Loop's "Afterglow", putting it through
the post-Ginn blender and coming out with something great. The
other cover here is a raging, lo-fi recording of Rollins Band's
"Turned Inside Out", performed at the inaugral Glasgow
Implodes fest a few years ago. There's a fierce, noise-ridden
performance of "Nice Wang" recorded on Julian Cope's
last tour, the epic dark drone rock of GMT recorded at the Lord
Clyde in Byker, and the aptly-named Kraut-esque monotone riff
of "Earth 3" from the confusing Manbyrd cassette. All
in all, Marzuraan do it better than anyone else going right
now; be it bleak minimal droning walls of sound, controlled experiments
into feedback or baws-out "post" rock, without the scene
points. They sound like the late, twisted Flag stuff on
a mid-period Voivod album, with Swervedriver on
in the background. Played by Helios Creed. Totally great
packaging by the guys at Thumbprint Press; three-panel chipboard
sleeve, double-sided print, with stark black letterpress and clear
varnish. You may know these guys' work from the Sunn live
album or one of the many Bastard Noise family releases...

MÖSE / HOG MOUNTIN
Split CD
(PsycheDOOMelic Records)
After mighty outputs by NYC sludge kings Negative
Reaction, and a V/A sampler, we dig out US based Hog Mountin,
a pissed off sludge band that lies somewhere inbetween Grief,
Crowbar and Eyehategod. You can expect pretty heavy
"scream the lungs out" sludge throughout most of the music.
On the other side of the split you get a couple of killer tunes
by the Belgian Möse, a misanthropic sludge-metal outfit
that released a killer 7" in the past. Raw, energetic material
like you might got to hear live on their European shows.

NEGATIVE REACTION "Endofyorerror" CD
(PsycheDOOMelic Records)
"Endofyorerror", originally released
in 1996 on their own record label, was Negative Reaction's
first full length CD. After 7 years, and two other full length
CDs including "The Orion Chronicles" in 2000 featuring
the 38 minute long "Moon Song" and "Everything
You Need for Galactic Battle Adventures", Negative Reaction's
first co-release with Game Two Records in the USA, and
PsycheDOOMelic Records in Europe in 2003, this 2003 re-release
of "Endofyorerror" by PsycheDOOMelic Records
comes to you with slight differences from the original release.
The two original bonus tracks have been replaced with one song
from the "Orbit EP", Negative Reaction's first
release with Game Two Records in 1998. We hope you enjoy
this archival masterpiece from the gods of sludge.

NEGATIVE REACTION
/ RAMESSES Split CD
(PsycheDOOMelic Records)
After 10 years under the curse of the Wizard,
original band members Mark Greening (drums and piano) and Tim Bagshaw
(bass) quit the crown jewel of British Doom - Electric Wizard
to concentrate on their new band, which they have baptised Ramesses.
The line up is completed by bassist/vocalist Adam Richardson --
Tim Bagshaw is playing lead guitar now. Ramesses is a psychedelic
space blues doom band with massive volume. On the first half of
the CD, you have Negative Reaction; doom/sludge metal gets
a new dose of crushing low-tuned Sabbath-molded riffage and
"Jerusalem"-like devastating intensity. File next to Bongzilla,
Grief, Sleep and Burning Witch.

NIGHT MUST FALL
"Dissonance of Thought" MLP
(Rusty Crowbar Records)
Torturous funeral doom. Invoking agony and hate
and the pleasure in reflecting them towards the humanity - the lethal
injection of planet earth - the two lenghty tracks manage to be
cruel and mesmerizing yet still somewhat beautiful in their crudeness.
A giant leap after their demos towards the torch bearers of Finland's
funeral doom genre. Imagine a mix of eerie funeral doom with the
ugly crushing sludge attitude and you're somewhere close to the
sound of this release.

ORBIT e.v. "Super
8" 10"
(Spirit of 76)
Very interesting, now disbanded German band
bringing together melodic and spacey rock with traces of prog and
a dose of post-rock which sometimes reaches almost Neurosis/Isis/Cult
of Luna -style heaviness; the only catch is that this was recorded
in 2000, way before the trend started! Vocals are used sparingly
and emphasis is on the textures created by the music, varying from
pop-like mellowness to storming heaviness. Perhaps not as polished
and style-conscious as the bands nowadays, but worth checking out!
Black vinyl in brown carton sleeve with full colour insert and a
slice of super 8 film.

REUTOFF "ReuTRauM II" 7"
(Kaos Kontrol)
Fifth instalment in the seven-part series presenting
various locations in Reutov, the city of origin for this acclaimed
Russian post industrial outfit. Launching off with the ceaseless
hum and rhythm of heavy machinery grinding onwards as alarm sounds
form into hysterical choirs complementing the slowly proceeding
pounding of the machines. As an aftermath, the second piece bears
a calmer approach with pulsating drones and loops yet retaining
a profoundly ominous nature. After proving themselves to master
a wide variety of styles within the post industrial genre, Reutoff
present here a rather traditional blend of dark ambient industrial
- nonetheless remaining at least equally strong as their previous
efforts. Transparent green vinyl in beautiful full colour sleeve
with special lamination finish. Limited edition of 500 copies. Last

RIDE FOR REVENGE
"The King of Snakes" LP
(Ahdistuksen Aihio Productions)
The brand new full length from Ride for Revenge,
first heard a while back on a split with fellow countrymen Torturium,
their half of the split a downtuned black trudge, like Winter
or diSEMBOWELMENT but with that impossible to describe Finnish
something that transforms everything into some special sort of what-the-fuck.
Creepy synths, plodding drums, grinding guitar and harsh vocals,
not exactly black metal, not in the traditional sense at least,
but most definitely metal. On "King of Snakes" however,
the band have gotten even weirder, and distinctly less metal, but
no less heavy. Supposedly there are guitars, but often it just sounds
like just drums and lots and lots of bass. Each song a plodding
doomic lurch, the drums pounding out a simple rhythm, the riff repeating
over and over, most songs with just a single part, very mesmerizing
and hypnotic. Like a caveman Circle or a guitarless Gore,
these guys just bash out endlessly cycling looped low end and killer
crushing doom drum pound. The vocals are a super affected gurgling
growl, not in the death metal sense, instead, super dramatic, intoning
unspeakable evils, a rumbling demonic baritone, peppered with the
occasional super delay drenched goat metal grunt. Some tracks also
have cool creepy keyboards as well, that add all sort of mood and
texture, and it's not cheesy metal synth either, it's all strange
analog buzz, a sort of krautrocky blur draped over the endlessly
pounding groove. Ride for Revenge are another one of those
black metal bands, who seem to be black metal more out of pedigree
than sound, but even though this doesn't sound like metal, it is
most definitely black. It sounds a bit like Godheadsilo jamming
with Finnish alchemical dronelords Tiermes, with the occasional
injection of Hawkwinded FX and SUNN-drenched rumble,
mysterious and murky swaths of throbbing low end thrum wrapped around
the drums like some evil warlock's cloak. Imagine if Amphetamine
Reptile was a black metal label... then these guys would be
Halo of Flies... Comes with a gatefold jacket and A2 sized
poster.

RIDE FOR REVENGE
/ TORTURIUM Split 10"
(Ahdistuksen Aihio Productions)
Here we have a split from two Finnish black
metal one man bands, one name you might recognize, the other you
might not, but both are equally amazing. It takes a very special
band to share a split with the mighty and mighty demented Dead
Reptile Shrine, but Torturium were up to the job, as
evidenced on their recent split with Dead Reptile Shrine.
Here they continue on their damaged and convoluted journey through
some off kilter black thrash buzzscape. Midtempo and completely
blown out, guitars are thick snarling beasts, flaying the flesh
from your skin, while some of the most anguished vocals ever soar
and shriek, the drums a murky thud, everything chaotic and crazed.
Blasting and buzzing relentlessly, the whole thing threatening to
come unhinged and fly into sharp jagged pieces. Fucked up and furious
and so great. Torturium shares the split with fellow countryman
Ride for Revenge, who with a name like that you might expect
some classic thrash, but this is anything but. Muddy downtuned guitars,
harsh vocals and simple pounding drums, all woven into some sort
of murky dirgey black doom. Midtempo rhythms, drums way up in the
mix, everything sort of droney and hypnotic, tons of reverb, weird
swaths of creepy clean guitar, everything cloudy and indistinct,
a super old school production like Winter or diSEMBOWELMENT,
fuzzy and relentlessly, trudging through thick FX drenched drifts
of black buzz and weird whorls of creepy haunted house synth. So
cool and so weird. Definitely a new favorite, and another notch
in Finland's holster, or bedpost, or whatever. So recommended!!!

R.Y.N. "Astral Death" CD
(Unrest Productions)
R.Y.N. is
the project of UK drone duo Pete Burn (Marzuraan) and Dean
Glaister (Romance). With one previous 7" on Drone
Records, this is their first full-length album. 6 long tracks
of waving and slowly shifting massive drones, based on guitar,
bass, metal and effects. The sounds here are just flooding immensely,
there's nothing 'concrete' you can hold on to; the mind and body
seem to be washed out slowly by these rustling feedbacking and
deeply reverberating overtune-waves. "Astral Death"
is a journey into the pulsating, meandering heart of disintegration.
Edition of 500 copies.

SEPPUKU / MUTANT
APE Split 7"
(At War with False Noise/Turgid Animal)
The incredibly busy George Proctor smashes us
across the chops for the duration of his side of this slab with
a punishing six minute lesson in harsh noise brutality. It sounds
like a large collection of faulty electric appliances being launched
down the stairs of a building on fire. Fucking GREAT! On the flipside
is a couple of tracks by the band formerly known as Tetsuo.
This side sees a change of direction from the previous lo-fi clatterings
of before and contains two mercilessly heavy tracks of full-on noise
doom!! First track, "The Sound Of Slow Decay" does exactly
what it says on the tin...repetitive sub-Sabbath riffing
which eventually kills itself, followed by "Vincent Price's
Wife Is Dead", which sounds like a hokey 70s nightmare sequence
from a Hammer film gone wrong. Stick-on laser printed sleeves and
a confusing insert that doesn't really shed much light on anything.
Black vinyl, 220 copies.
Price: 5 € (Europe/World)

SINK "The Process" CD
(Kult of Nihilow/Kaos Kontrol)
There is obscure and then there is Obscure.
The difference is subtle, but when you hear Sink, you know
the limit between obscure and Obscure has been surpassed. The
Process is a beast that drags you below the surface and lets you
gasp for air just enough to keep conscious and experience the
horror. Monumental wall of sound built from demented vibrations,
violent distortion, wailing feedback, reverberating clashes and
almost choral (in)human voices echoing in your mind like amplified
painful memories; and when the wall collapses, the undertow pulls
you deeper into paranoid and disturbing surroundings filled with
static drones, scorching electrical trills and gravely impressive
Obscurity that defies mental health. You may never reach back
to the surface
This is not a sludge record. This is not
a drone record. This is not an experimental record. This is The
Process. Released in co-operation by Kult of Nihilow and
Kaos Kontrol. CD comes in special fold-out full colour
carton sleeve in a limited edition of 1000.

SLOTH "A Whole Other World of Fun AKA 13 Songs 13
Samples" CD
(At War with False Noise)
Ohio's Sloth have been creating some
of the most fucked up, weird, funny music of the past 10+ years
and this is their first ever CD full-length album! Known for split
records with bands such as Corrupted, Grief, Floor,
Upsidedown Cross, Noothgrush etc etc, this album
sees Sloth in a much more musically diverse frame of mind
than usual. The painful sludge noise is still there but there's
an altogether more considered approach. There's piano on it for
fuck's sake. Weird lo-fi songs that sound like they were written
by a fucked up kid mix sit happily with garage rock high end jams
and tar pit slo-mo doom dirges. The "13 samples" are
bang on and the humour is as bizarre and hilarious as ever. Full
CD with full colour 4 page booklet, drawn by artist-in-chief Uberneecie
and coloured in by a group of five year olds from Glasgow.

SNOWBLOOD "The Human Tragedy" CD
(Lawgiver Records)
Snowblood
is a Scottish metal clan whose crusty blend of metalcore, stoner
rock sludgery and Neurosis-esque hypnotics ooze out six
tracks of raw aggression. Stick to your ribs guitars found on
tracks like Claim Nothing as Thine Own are commonplace
here, as are tortured vocals, menacing rhythms, and a plethora
of dynamic dips from doom to groove that puts you on the front
car of this whacked-out roller coaster ride.

SSHE RETINA STIMULANTS "Central Node Recording"
CDr
(Nihil Market)
Masterly document of transforming the character
of a cultural commodity into sound, and via decomposition and
manipulation giving it an entirely new structure and meaning.
Acoustic signatures collected from railway stations shift into
soundworks bearing the fluence and dynamics of the sound sources,
yet presenting them in the form of harsh ambience often taking
an overwhelming approach by piercing all senses with all-engulfing
frequencies. These 8 new pieces belong to the series of this Italian
sonic genius exploring field recordings, and presents by far one
of his strongest works thus far. Good quality black/white sticker
labelled CDr in slimline jewel box with professionally printed
great black/white sleeve. Limited edition of 150 copies. LAST
COPIES!

STUMM "I" CD
(Aesthetic Death)
"Heres a new release from UK label Aesthetic
Death, who havent put anything new out since Esoteric's
Pernicious Enigma (at least as far as we know). And this debut
full length from Finnish extreme sludge/trio Stumm definitely
fits in with the likes of Esoteric. Just looking through
the grim black-and-red booklet for this CD clues us in that this
is going to be an unfiltered stream of negative energy, from the
creepy cover image of the little boy curled up, fetal-position
style in a corner, to grisly images of substance abuse, suicide,
and homelessness. Grim shit. It doesn't get lighter when this
CD unfurls it's four songs across 35 minutes of RAW, primitive,
massively heavy Finnish DOOM, with thick and filthy syrupy riffs
churning over and over again, slow and snail-crawling, sometimes
stripped down to a single powerchord banged out ad infinitum,
a nihilistic sludge feast that references the points between Eyehategod,
Grief, Melvins, and Khanate (James Plotkin
from Khanate actually mastered I). Spattered with feedback
and hoarse tortured howling over spare, planet-shaking drumming,
these four tunes are super slow, saurian numbers that sometimes
pause to hang in mid-air before crashing back to earth. Fans of
monstrous ultradoom like Fleshpress, Corrupted,
Moss, Bunkur, etc., can't go wrong with this one."

jamming with The Obsessed, together with plenty of Zep,
Floyd, Sabbath and Minor Threat in the mix!

WIJLEN WIJ "s/t"
CD
(Aesthetic Death)
Aesthetic Death
has only been releasing about one or two albums a year over the
past few years, but every time they come out with something new,
you can guarentee that it's going to consist of the most morose,
mindbending extreme doom imaginable. Esoteric, Stumm,
Wreck of the Hesperus - all have been documented by Stu at
AD, and all are essential listening for fans of ultraslow
ultra doom. Wijlen Wij's self-titled debut is the first new
Aesthetic Death release since the killer Wreck of the
Hesperus CD from last year. Their songs are huge, lumbering
blasts of slomo funeral doom, very much in the tradition of Skepticism's
classic "Stormcrowfleet" and Thergothon's "Stream
from the Heavens", ultra slow and intensely depressing, dark
and raw, the long lumbering songs buried in an austere graveyard
atmosphere. But then there are the guitars, so saturated in distortion
that they sound alot like Nadja's overmodulated walls of
fuzzy drone, massive crumbling waves of crunch pouring forth over
sparse plodding tomb-marches beaten on huge tympani drums, over
which Wijlen Wij drape layers of ominous, beautiful church
organ drones, minor key fugues, and haunting Gregorian chant-like
choirs. Awesome! The first track even sounds like a deathdoom version
of music from the Conan The Barbarian soundtrack. 6 tracks of epic,
desolate doom metal perfectly crafted out of obsidian riffage, which
isn't too surprising as the band is a virtual funeral doom/drone-doom
supergroup, featuring members of Pantheist, Solicide,
In Somnis, Until Death Overtakes Me, and Fall of
the Grey Winged One! In a limited edition of 1000 copies.

YEAR OF NO LIGHT "Nord" CD
(Crucial Blast)
"As part of our current plundering of
the French art-metal underground, Crucial Blast presents
the North American release of 'Nord', the colossal debut from
French ensemble Year Of No Light that was originally released
via the French label Radar Swarm in 2006. Year Of No
Light bring an amazing set of songwriting chops to the 10
songs that make up 'Nord', a heavy, chugging metallic monster
that channels both gloomy atmospherics reminiscent of The Cure,
and crushing Neurosis-inspired dirgecore, heavy, raw, and
lumbering, but at times extremely beautiful and epic. To us, YEAR
OF NO LIGHT's Nord seems to orbit the guitar-heavy early 90's
alt rock of bands like Swervedriver and Dinosaur Jr.,
The Cure and My Bloody Valentine, just as much as
it draws from the arty, crushing metallic post-hardcore pioneered
by Old Man Gloom and Neurosis. Sure, there are a
ton of bands out there that touch upon similiar influences, but
we can't think of anyone recently that has delivered an album
in this style that is quite this catchy and well-written. Nord
flows seamlessly between passages of ultra melodic rock and frenzied
bursts of dissonant, crushing hardcore, to austere radiant guitar
figures and gorgeous ambient drones, to massive doomy dirge metal,
utterly gorgeous Loveless-esque melodic bliss, and some almost
folksy, but unbelievably EPIC riffs, with powerful, strained vocals
fighting through their wall of sound. Presented in a 4-panel gatefold
case from Stumptown Printers, and featuring all new artwork."
